ProjectionLab offers deeper tax-strategy exploration, cash-flow visualization and estate modeling. Zenarios offers monthly forecasts, local cost suggestions and financial plans that stay on your device without an account. Both support scenarios, financial independence, Monte Carlo and historical testing. Those shared features should not be presented as exclusive to either app.
These products overlap more than a quick “simple versus powerful” comparison suggests. Zenarios also has conditional milestones, withdrawal order, flexible spending and market stress tests. ProjectionLab also supports international planning and mobile browser use. The meaningful differences are in timing, strategy depth, data handling and the workflow you prefer.
ProjectionLab’s product overview ↗
Choose the kind of detail you need
If you want to experiment with tax brackets, Roth conversions, capital-gain harvesting and withdrawal shielding together, ProjectionLab has dedicated tools for that task. Its Optimize workflow can evaluate strategies against different objectives, so you can examine trade-offs instead of only changing a general return assumption.
ProjectionLab Optimize ↗
If your immediate question is whether buying a home in September leaves enough cash for parental leave in November, monthly timing matters. Zenarios calculates each month and exposes the account balances and flows behind the answer. ProjectionLab’s help center says its projections operate year by year, even though income and expense inputs can have monthly frequencies. That is a modeling difference; it does not make annual planning unsuitable for long-term decisions.
ProjectionLab’s projection timing ↗
If you want a saved plan available across devices, ProjectionLab’s account storage is a practical advantage. If you want financial plans to stay on your own device with no login, Zenarios provides that model, with manual backups and transfers. Both approaches have a cost in either convenience or data sharing.

Building a life plan
| Feature | Zenarios | ProjectionLab |
|---|---|---|
| Forecast timing | Calculates month by month, with monthly event timing and inspections. | Operates and reports year by year; accepting monthly amounts does not make the projection monthly. Source ↗ |

| Scenario comparison | Fork scenarios, compare outcomes and see what changes caused the difference. Up to five separate plans. | Premium includes multiple plans, what-if scenarios and Compare Mode. Source ↗ |
| Conditional milestones | Dates, ages, dependencies, debt-free or financial conditions can trigger milestones. | Custom milestones with multiple criteria, such as an age and a minimum net worth. Source ↗ |
| Career and family changes | Templates for children, parental leave, marriage, part-time work, sabbaticals, care and inheritance; custom income and spending changes. | Salary, side income, part-time periods, inheritance, custom income and advanced change schedules; family costs can be modeled as expenses. Source ↗ |
| Housing and other assets | Home purchases and sales, rent, mortgages, rental income, moving, cars and repeat vehicle replacements. | Home purchases, rent-versus-own decisions, rental income and recurring purchases. Source ↗ |
| Debt | Loan schedules, early repayments, rate changes, overdrafts and avalanche/snowball payoff plans. | Mortgages, vehicle and unsecured debt, including student, medical and credit-card debt, with payment and interest controls. Source ↗ |
| Local starting estimates | Living-cost levels for 153 countries and housing estimates in 12; editable, bundled reference data. | Starts with your account, income and spending estimates; the reviewed guide does not establish an equivalent local-cost suggestion library. Source ↗ |
| Currency | Local plan currency, plus foreign-currency amounts with editable exchange-rate and drift assumptions. No live FX feed. | Choose a display currency and international account presets. This alone does not establish full cross-border or multi-currency tax handling. Source ↗ |
Tax, retirement and investment strategies
| Feature | Zenarios | ProjectionLab |
|---|---|---|
| International taxes | 38 income-tax systems with different levels of detail, plus a manual effective rate; German pension and insurance detail is a particular focus. | International tax presets and account types, including Canada, UK, Australia, Germany and the Netherlands. It is not US-only. Source ↗ |
| Taxable and retirement accounts | Taxable, tax-free and tax-deferred accounts; local presets, access rules, some contribution limits and early-access penalties. | Account-specific tax treatment, taxable investment cost basis and Roth contribution basis, alongside retirement account types. Source ↗ |
| Tax analytics | Income and investment-tax estimates and breakdowns. US gains taxation is simplified: no separate short/long-term gains rates or NIIT. | Tax-by-type and effective/marginal-rate analytics, with effective bracket visualizations and year-level detail. Source ↗ |
| Education savings | Can schedule college costs and savings manually; no dedicated 529 qualified/non-qualified withdrawal rules. | Dedicated 529 accounts, contributions and education-expense funding, with tax treatment for withdrawals. Source ↗ |

A Roth account preset is not a conversion tool. | Optimize combines Roth conversions, gain harvesting and withdrawal shielding, with strategy comparisons and objectives. Source ↗ |
| Healthcare tax thresholds | Health-cost assumptions and German insurance models; no dedicated ACA subsidy or Medicare/IRMAA strategy optimizer. | Optimization can target ACA limits, IRMAA cliffs, federal brackets and custom income ceilings. Source ↗ |
| US retirement distributions | No automatic RMD engine or dedicated 72(t) SEPP model. | Tax analytics includes RMDs and supports 72(t) SEPP modeling and contribution/drawdown sequencing. Source ↗ |

Where Zenarios falls short
Zenarios does not have ProjectionLab’s coordinated tax optimizer, effective-bracket analytics, dedicated Roth conversion and gain-harvesting tools, or net-legacy and estate-tax engine. It has no automatic US RMD calculation or 72(t) SEPP workflow, and its US investment tax treatment is simplified. A tax-deferred account and a customizable withdrawal order do not fill those gaps.
Its investment assumptions are also simpler than a detailed asset-allocation model: you can choose account returns and a different return and volatility after retirement, but you cannot analyze individual securities or a full stock/bond allocation path. Flexible spending rules and stress tests help explore risk; they do not make every investment or tax strategy available.
There is no Sankey chart, client dashboard, employee-benefit portal or integration with another budgeting service. Financial data stays local, so there is no automatic cross-device sync. The phone app’s native interface and local calculations are useful, but they come with responsibility for exports and backups. Browser storage can be cleared or removed.
Where ProjectionLab falls short
ProjectionLab currently operates year by year. That is a limitation if you need to inspect the cash shortfall between two events in different months of the same year. Its mobile experience is a web app or installable PWA; the reviewed help page does not offer a formal native phone app. Neither fact means you cannot plan from a phone.

Mobile support ↗
It also does not directly link financial accounts. It does, however, support third-party plugins for importing information from other finance tools. Saying that ProjectionLab has “no integrations” would be incorrect. Those plugins introduce separate permissions, dependencies and privacy terms to evaluate.
Account linking and plugins ↗
International presets are useful, but the existence of a German or Canadian preset does not establish that every pension, tax treaty or cross-border situation is covered. The same caution applies to Zenarios’ larger country list: a count of supported countries does not measure the completeness of any one country’s model. Check your specific accounts, benefits and taxes in either product.
ProjectionLab international tax features ↗
Finally, advanced planning depends on the tier. Do not evaluate the free version and conclude that ProjectionLab lacks tax analytics or compare it with a paid feature list as if everything were free. More customization can help a complex plan, but it also leaves more assumptions for you to understand and maintain.

A fair way to try both
Build one baseline with the same balances, cost basis, income, spending, investment return, inflation, retirement dates and plan length. Check whether a rate is before or after inflation, and whether taxes or investment fees are already included. A difference in assumptions can outweigh a difference in software.
Next, test the decision that matters: a home purchase, an earlier retirement, flexible spending in a downturn or a conversion strategy. Inspect the flows that explain the result. For a timing-sensitive decision, look at the months in Zenarios; for a tax-strategy decision, inspect ProjectionLab’s tax analytics and compare the actual strategy settings.
Monte Carlo percentages are not interchangeable ratings of the products. Return distributions, historical sequences, tax treatment and success definitions differ. ProjectionLab lets users configure outcome categories; Zenarios uses its own cash-flow and shortfall logic. A higher number alone does not tell you which result is more reliable.
ProjectionLab simulations ↗
Choose ProjectionLab when its deeper strategy tools and visual analysis address your main questions. Choose Zenarios when monthly life planning, local estimates and keeping plans on your device matter more. Either can help with financial independence; neither automatically files taxes, trades your portfolio or guarantees that a plan will work.

Common questions
Is Zenarios a ProjectionLab alternative?
Zenarios is an alternative for monthly financial forecasts, scenario comparison and financial independence planning, with plans stored on your device. It lacks dedicated Roth conversion, capital-gain harvesting and estate-tax tools. Use the feature table to check the workflows you need.
Does Zenarios need a bank connection or an account?
No. You enter your own balances, income and spending. Zenarios keeps financial plans on your device or in your browser, with no login or automatic cross-device sync. You can export and restore a backup yourself.
Can I use Zenarios on a desktop computer?
Yes. The full Zenarios app runs in a modern desktop browser and is free for now. It uses the same monthly planning model as the iPhone app, with financial data saved in that browser.
